How to Make Volleyball Conchas: A Sporty Twist on a Classic Treat

Ingredients

For the Dough (Yields 6 Conchas):

  • 180g All-purpose Flour
  • 3g Active Dry Yeast
  • 25g Sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • 1/4 tsp Vanilla Extract
  • 45ml Milk
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 1/4 tsp Salt

For the Topping:

  • 75g All-purpose Flour
  • 75g Sugar
  • 60g Vegetable Shortening
  • 1/4 tsp Vanilla Extract (optional)
  • White Food Coloring

Instructions

1. Prepare the Dough
Mix flour, yeast, and sugar in a bowl. Add egg, vanilla, and milk. Mix until a soft dough forms (about 3–5 minutes). Incorporate butter and salt, then knead until smooth and elastic (10 minutes at medium speed). Cover and let rise until doubled, about 1.5 hour.

Divide into 6 dough balls, lightly grease the tops with shortening, then cover and rise again for 1 to 1.5 hours.

2. Make the Topping
Combine flour, sugar, and shortening until a soft paste forms, then mix with white food coloring.

3. Shape and Decorate
Flatten topping, place one over each dough ball and stamp.

4. Bake
Rest for about 20 to 30 minutes. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until the conchas are lightly golden. Let cool and serve!
